dechoes – LookingOutwards02

Above is a piece by the engineer Michael Noll called Ninety computer-generated sinusoids with linearly increasing period (1967). I find this visually intriguing and elegant, mostly due to its simplicity and the attention that was given to its form. The base of the sine function seems to be multiplied by itself as every new one is generated, making the piece seem very balanced and natural, in spite of the ninety waves. I suppose it was made by distorting a for-loop of straight lines with a non-linear function, that was set to draw only once.
