“Diagonal White 13685” | Edward Zajec | 1968
The work I have chosen for the Generative Art Looking Outwards is “Diagonal White 13685” by Edward Zajec. The piece is created in a number of steps, the first of which is to create a rectangle using the Fibonacci sequence. That rectangle is then subdivided a number of times. Here is a diagram of that process:
I admire the way the shapes interact with one another to create a sense of space and perspective. There is an organized randomness to the piece. By this, I mean that even though the placement of the shapes appears to be random, the way they interact and overlap with one another is quite elegant. This project would not be terribly difficult to recreate today, though it is impressive he was able to make this in 1968.
