04. Code & Form IV: Time, Data, Pattern

This set of Deliverables is due Wednesday, 9/20/2023 at the beginning of class. It has 7 parts. It deepens our ability to manage time, arrays, data, algorithms, and interactivity. We also look outwards into some contemporary generative art, and we wrap up our modular pattern with the Risograph print.

  1. In Discord: #GenerativeArtDeepDive: 30 Minutes (see below)
  2. OpenProcessing: Timer: 30 Minutes
  3. OpenProcessing: Ripples: 30 Minutes
  4. OpenProcessing: Living Line: 30 Minutes
  5. OpenProcessing: Longest Line: 60 Minutes
  6. OpenProcessing: Four Letters: 90 Minutes
  7. IRL Printing: Modular Pattern: 120 Minutes. Revise your design; print 25 Riso copies in the Doherty DPL on our special paper. More details about this will appear here.

Generative Art Deep Dive:

(30 minutes.) There are many kinds of new media art and creative coding; “generative art” is just one type we’ll be looking at this semester. Let’s familiarize ourselves with work by some of the better known practitioners. Below is a list of 9 generative artists who are active today, aged 25-45. For each of the following  artists, spend 2 minutes looking at the linked materials. Scan their webpages, their art, and their interviews. Choose one of these artists whose work speaks to you more than the others, and spend another 10 minutes doing a deeper dive into their work (including projects I may not have linked). Now:

  • In our Discord channel, #GenerativeArtDeepDive,
  • Select one image by your chosen artist that you find appealing or intriguing.
  • Embed an image of the artwork in your post (use a screengrab if necessary).
  • Write a sentence about why you selected this project.
  • Write a sentence on something about their practice that stuck with you.
