The Shapes of a Song

The Shape of Song

The Shape of Song immediately grabbed my attention because I really enjoy music visualization. This one became even more interesting to me as I scrolled through all the examples. I could recognize the sounds in the musical pieces by looking at the visualizations because of how the circles identified heavier and lighter sounds with thicker of thinner strokes. The melody was also easy to follow through how the circles built up on top of one another. Although there is little practical value in this visualization, it’s beautiful and simple in a way that it relates to the viewers.

History of the World in 100 Seconds

This visualization is quite brilliant (in my humble opinion). It’s visually incredibly simple and would mean nothing without the context. However, once you introduce the concept, it becomes incredibly clear and fascinating.  We all know wikipedia and we all use it, and this is yet another brilliant way to visualize the abundance of information that is available to us online in just 100 seconds. One critique, however, is that it would be nice to have a slight outline of the continents. But perhaps it’s better off without it in a way that it makes you wonder what’s going on at first glance.

Geographic News Coverage Visualized

I love how this visualization resembles boiling lava. I think it’s quite a nice metaphor for representing the news given how morbid the news usually are. Although the depth of information presented is quite shallow, I think it makes up for it with a beautiful visualization and a clever metaphor.
