Golan LEVIN (Associate Professor of Electronic Art) and Patrick Gage KELLEY (Teaching Assistant and PhD Student, CASOS), are proud to present capstone projects and other treats from our interdisciplinary Spring 2010 course, Special Topics in Interactive Art & Computational Design, in which 22 students from seven departments — Art, Architecture, Design, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Electrical Engineering, and Entertainment Technology — spanning the full range from freshmen to doctoral students — have explored computation as a medium for curiosity-driven experimentation!

Featuring new works by: Caryn AUDENRIED, Solomon BISKER, Amanda BURRIDGE, Richard CAMERON, Justin EDMUND, Mehrdad GHODS, Max HAWKINS, Michael HILL, Xiaoyuan JIANG, Nara KASBERGEN, Jessica MENG, Jon MILLER, Alyssa REUTER, Matthew SANDLER, Paul SHEN, Jordan SINCLAIR, Gabriela URIBE, Karl D.D. WILLIS + Cheng XU, Kuan Ju WU, David YEN, and Raymond YUN.

Final Exhibition from Interactive Art & Computational Design, Spring 2010

This exhibition was made possible with generous support from the Fine Foundation; the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon; and the CMU School of Art.

Amanda BURRIDGE, “Vent At Me”

Visual research into patterns between what people post publicly on the internet and how comfortable they then feel about those posts.

Kuan Ju WU, Head Monster”

“Head Monster” is an interactive game that the uses a face shaped control panel to drive a small head-shaped robot. The robot is hungry.

Alyssa REUTER, “Minute”

“Minute” is an examination of individual perception of time–specifically, how everyone perceives the duration of one minute differently.

Karl D.D. WILLIS + Cheng XU, Shaper”

“Shaper” is a prototyping device that uses a three axis CNC machine to interactively dispense expanding polyurethane foam material. The device can be controlled directly via a translucent touch screen, allowing the user to look into the fabrication area and create physical artifacts with simple gestures.

Nara KASBERGEN, “TypeFace Map”

“TypeFace Map” is a visual analysis of letter shapes and mapped in 2D space where proximity represents a measure of similarity between two typefaces.

Mehrdad GHODS, Sub-Fabricator”

“Sub-Fabricator” is a framework that enables Processing users to fabricate objects as the output of their Processing codes.

Caryn AUDENRIED, “Color Shifts”

“Color Shifts” tracks color changes in an assortment of different objects over time.

Max HAWKINS, “Ant Farm Unwrapped”

“Ant Farm Unwrapped” is a pattern generator for inflatable structures, implemented as a plugin to Google Sketchup, that simplifies one of the most difficult parts of making an inflatable: deciding where to cut.

Cheng XU“Wire Speaker”

“Wire Speaker”interactively sculpts wire forms based on the sounds of people talking.

Michael HILL, “Blinky Blocks Software”

“Blinky Blocks Software” is an interface for a previously developed interactive colored blocks that would allow an individual to effortlessly run a simulation with the blocks without expert coding knowledge.

David YEN, “Fluency Games”

“Fluency Games” explores the incorporation of game mechanics to the visualization of prosody to engage and connect with children.

Matthew SANDLER, “Dog Collar”

“Dog Collar” is a physical device worn by the performer that delivers low impact shocks whenever the performer receives a tweet.

Gabriela URIBE“Visualizing Music”

“Visualizing Music” creates static images representing musical compositions, visually expressing that piece’s use of instruments, rhythmic layout, and how expressively it’s performed.

Paul SHEN, “Two Girls, One Cup”

“Two Girls, One Cup” is a project seeking to find pattern in people’s documented reactions to the scat fetish video of the same name.

Justin EDMUND, “Visually Mobile”

“Visually Mobile” is a media bookmarking app. Gather images and video to create your own visual trends over time, and discover the unique visual culture of people and places around the world.

Richard CAMERON, “FlightSage”

“FlightSage” is an interactive website showing the cheapest round-trip flights to a specific city for the upcoming weekend.

Jessica MENG“PIN Numbers”

“PIN Numbers” examines trends in people’s choice of 4 digit bank PIN numbers and patterns made when it’s being typed into a 3 x 3 keypad.

Raymond YUN, Kaleidoscope Mirror”

“Kaleidoscope Mirror” is an interactive digital kaleidoscope mounted on a physical wooden wheel.  The piece is sensitive to time so if you rotate the wheel backwards you will see an image of yourself from the past.

Jon MILLER“Little”

“Little” is a game that allows a player to dynamically manipulate the terrain while trying to protect your “Little”, a small car that follows you around, and damage your opponent’s.

Solomon BISKER, The Recursive Photo Booth”

“The Recursive Photo Booth” uses marker-based augmented reality (AR) to enable a simple and fun form of collaborative photography.

Jordan SINCLAIR, “Flegs”

“Flegs” is an interactive installation that detects people walking behind a waist-high wall and projects fake feet that move in real-time with the walker onto the wall.

Xiaoyuan JIANG, “Attack Saws”

“Attack Saws” is a game where a flying attack saw slashes at an AI-controlled swarm of little stick characters making them bleed and painting the ground with blood.
